And if you can't afford the MC760, we'd recommend passing over the UM175 for the slightly older Novatel Ovation U727 modem, which has a flip-up antenna for better reception and a microSD card reader, and is based on the same Qualcomm MSM6800 chipset as the UM175.Welcome to the unofficial community for discussing all-things Verizon. The Verizon Wireless UM175 is currently free with contract, but if you can afford it, the smaller, faster, and pricier Novatel Ovation MC760 is a better choice. That didn't seem to affect download speeds, however. Overall, MC760 outpaced the UM175 on almost all measures, one exception being that the larger UM175 reported stronger signal strength in some locations. The UM175 did better than the other two modems in 12 of 39 download tests, but the MC760 bested the other two in 20. We got an average of 893 kilobits per second down, with a peak of 2.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 413 Kbps on Verizon's EV-DO Rev A network. It performed well considering that it's less expensive than the MC760. We tested the UM175 in eight rounds of uploads and downloads at four different locations, against the Sierra Wireless AC595U and the Novatel Ovation MC760 (Verizon Wireless) modems, also available on Verizon Wireless. VZAccess Manager works the same with all of Verizon's modems it's a pretty nondescript dialer application that lets you easily track connection speed and data usage. You'll want to download Verizon's free drivers and its VZAccess Manager connection manager from before plugging in the modem, but after that, the UM175 connects just like every other Verizon modem. The UM175 worked with both our Windows XP and Vista PCs and our Mac running OS 10.5.6.
